We seek a candidate with an interest in teaching rigorous, lab-based courses, primarily to non-science majors. HONR 1034 sections engage highly capable undergraduates in small (15-18 student), hands-on investigations of unique scientific topics based on each instructor’s areas of interest and expertise, with all sections sharing the goal of increasing scientific literacy. The topic/area of the proposed section could be related to any natural science including, but not limited to, biology, chemistry, physics, geology/Earth sciences, and neuroscience/psychology. More information about the course and descriptions of recent course offerings can be found here.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

HONR 1034 is a 4-credit course, taught for 2 hours twice a week with labs integrated into class time.  Instructors are also expected to hold weekly office hours. Classes can be scheduled in the morning, afternoon, or evening depending on instructor availability. This course is taught on GW’s Mount Vernon Campus (MVC), which is easily accessible via campus shuttle from Foggy Bottom. Parking is also available on the MVC.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must currently hold an M.S. or Ph.D. in a scientific field, have excellent teaching skills as demonstrated by teaching evaluations or references, and have the desire to develop an innovative, introductory-level undergraduate course (including associated labs) focused on a topic that would interest our inquisitive students. The UHP is committed to building and sustaining an inclusive community for all.  Candidates should be prepared to teach and support a diverse group of students.

Application Procedure:

To be considered, please submit a CV, a brief (1 - 2 paragraph) description of the proposed course topic (including a description of at least one possible lab), and a recent set of student evaluations (or other teaching evaluations, as appropriate) to Dr. Bethany Cobb Kung, Director of the University Honors Program, at bcobbatgwu [dot] edu (bcobb[at]gwu[dot]edu) with the subject line “UHP Fall 2023” or “UHP Spring 2024”.  Review of applications will begin immediately and continue on a rolling basis until the position is filled, with applications received by May 1 for Fall 2023 and July 14 for Spring 2024 receiving the fullest review.  Questions may be directed to Dr. Kung.
