Honors Registration Information for Faculty

Waitlists

All Honors courses (as well as any of their cross-listed non-Honors sections) will have waitlists if seats are no longer available during registration week. Waitlists generally become available the Monday after registration week, the same day as general registration, or the “add/drop" period, opens. Once waitlists become available, students must add themselves through GWeb.

If there are no more seats available the week of registration, students will have to wait until the waitlist becomes available. If a course is cross-listed, Honors students can also register or add themselves to the waitlist for both the Honors course or the cross-listed section unless specified otherwise on the Schedule of Classes.

Once a waitlist becomes available, we cannot over enroll students and bypass an active waitlist, even with instructor permission. Students should add themselves to the waitlist and will be able to claim a seat should one become available. This policy is especially important for first year seminars in order to maintain an even distribution between the sections.

Occasionally, due to complex circumstances, a student may have a genuine need to enroll in a certain section which is waitlisted. If a student requests to be enrolled in a filled class because of such circumstances, please direct them to speak with a Program Manager. A Program Manager will work with that student to identify alternative options. If the situation is deemed legitimate and no other options are feasible, the student will be moved to the top of the course waitlist. If no seats become available in the course prior to the beginning of the semester, a Program Manager may then ask you to approve an over enrollment for that student.

Waitlists are generally cleared on the Friday of the first week of classes (the specific date is also listed on the registration schedule); after that, registration opens without waitlists. It is at this point that students can request instructor permission to be enrolled in a class over the enrollment cap. To grant permission for an over enrollment, simply send one of the Program Managers an email (RTF and RTF-EZs forms are not required for Honors classes). So that the program maintains a fair enrollment process for all students, over enrollment requests based on course or instructor preference (as opposed to legitimate need, which should be handled through the Program Managers) should only be granted by instructors very rarely.

Please note that for most classes, we set the waitlist capacity to 10 students max. Once a waitlist has reached its capacity, the section will say “Closed” on the Schedule of Classes and students will not have the option to add themselves to the waitlist.

Non-UHP students and waitlists

Non-UHP students cannot register or add themselves to the waitlist for Honors sections and will receive an error message if they attempt to do so. If a course is cross-listed with Honors, non-UHP students can only register or add themselves to the cross-listed section.

Non-UHP students should follow the same process of adding themselves to the waitlist for the non-Honors section if a seat is no longer available. For all registration questions, non-UHP students can communicate with their school’s academic advisor.

Support: Care network and looping in UHP advisors

If UHP faculty have academic or social concerns about an Honors student, please let the UHP advisors know as soon as possible. As appropriate, UHP advisors will monitor the student(s)’ situation more carefully or reach out if need be. Most concerns can be kept confidential. Please note that all faculty and the UHP advisors are “responsible employees”, and are required by law to directly report any instances of sexual harassment, sexual assault, or relationship abuse (using this online form or by contacting the Title IX office at 202-994-7434). When in doubt, please reach out. Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting our students!

Other advising-related resources on campus (all of which remain available online):

CARE Team Referral - it is best to err on the side of submitting a referral (in addition to contacting us directly), as the CARE Network can activate university-wide resources for the student (if needed).

School advisors - in addition to UHP advising, all students have an assigned advisor in their GW school who is available to serve as a resource.

Academic Commons - this is the Gelman Library's one-stop-shop for all academic support, a resource to which we frequently refer students.
